The following Military Field Manuals are an invaluable resource for anyone trying to understand the workings of the modern U.S. military establishment. All the manuals posted are the latest available and reflect current Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all areas listed. New titles are being posted all the time, check back or send an e-mail if an area of interest is not listed.

This site is not affiliated with the U.S. military, or any other military organization for that matter. I have down loaded this information from publicly available sources, nothing here is restricted or classified. My reasons for keeping a separate source for this information (rather than merely linking to the information) are twofold. First, I find that having the information locally available provides faster response time. Additionally, I have provided .zip files of the manuals so you can download the information and have it local on your own hard disc as well. This makes referencing information much easier overall. Secondly, the military sites tend to go up and down for maintenance and security reasons, making access to them a hit or miss affair at times. And some people are paranoid about accessing government sites for information. You know who you are. Well, now there won't be a problem for those of you who still desire this sort of information. Of course, if you are really paranoid, I'm a plant from the FBI anyway.....

I have removed links to the military main library page from the manuals in order to make certain that no one is confused about this site being related to the military at all. If you wish to access the military library pages directly go here. The information available here is excellent, and will help make you a much more informed citizen about military matters, straight from the horses mouth. If you wish information that is less technical (oriented towards professional practitioners of military arts) and more informative for the interested citizen, check out the News and Information Links section of the military sub-site.

For Wargamers, these maunals provide invaluable tactics and operative art that you can put to use immediately in your favourite simulation. If you are trying to create such a simulation, this information provides the absolute best basic material on how military matters are approached today. My wargaming has improved considerably after reading the platoon and company manuals on armoured and infantry warfare tactics. Before, it was hit and miss. I knew what did and did not work when I played, but I never knew why. Now I know how to correctly exploit success, or recover from defeat without (necessarily) losing the game. Very fun stuff, if that's your bag.

For the beginning student of military matters this information, taken as a whole, will provide a basic level of understanding of how situations are approached by the military establishment. It is better to read the books and specific sections of the manuals I've provided in my notes in the Afghanistan section, in order to get up to speed quickly. Reading the manuals straight through is probably not the best way to understand what is what. Similar to reading the dictionary in order to understand English. You might have a technical understanding of the language, but appreciating good literature is a better (and more enriching) way to learn how to read.

I hope I am able to provide a service to the public with this information. An informed polity in matters of such consequence - financial, material, and moral, makes for a better society. Enjoy. - N
